I’m running into problems with closed captions. I have a beta sp tape that has been captioned. I capture it into FCP (8-bit uncompressed), drop it into a new sequence and dump it onto a new beta sp tape. The captions are gone.

I know the captions are encoded onto line 21. to me, if you capture, the same image is going back onto the new tape. Line 21 shouldn’t change. Am I doing something wrong?

Is there a way to preview the CC in FCP? Right now, all I can think is to drop it onto a DVD and check the DVD. I tried that with this project and saw no captions. So, either the captions weren’t brought in to FCP, or they were dropped when I converted to mpeg2.

Please help. I have projects coming down the pipe and no solution.

    Thanks.

When you encode to DVD the top part of the video where the CC resides is cropped. You will need to take a TV and hook it up to your system and test it that way or get a VCR and output to it and test it froma there.

We are in the same boat as you. Just discovered, per Apple Support, that Final Cut does not support Closed Captioning. So anything you bring into Final Cut that is closed captioning – FCP does not retain it. This is strange – since we are able to see Line 21 when played back on the timeline and when dropped to tape – but the monitor is not reading it. We are testing it now by moving the video a line up and a line down. Not sure if this will work – shows you where we are with this. Have you heard otherwise?

I have not heard otherwise. I read a post on the Apple discussion group that mentioned FCP might be the problem, might not output line 21. But, you are saying you see line 21. So, why does the encoding get stripped?

I’m frustrated because I can’t find a solution to what seems a simple problem. Let me know if shifting works. If I find a solution, I’ll post it.
