Close Captioning
Posted by Ernie Santella on May 31, 2009 at 5:25 pmCan anyone recommend a resource for close-captioning a :30 TV spot? As in a company that I can send my master or file too? And what’s a ballpark price for one :30 spot if you send them the script? (I just can’t afford the software to do it myself)

May 31, 2009 at 9:41 pmWe use: https://www.captionmax.com/
for much of our work. Very professional, competent. You know they’ll get it done right.Don’t know what the cost is for :30’s. We only do long form.

Question… do you send off a script and video file on portable HD, have them encode it and put it back on your Drive? Or do you send them a tape?
This project is only SD. I would like to send them a file as that would be easier to import back into FCP and export to BetacamSP tape. What’s you guys’ workflow?

June 1, 2009 at 2:30 amErnie,
I can only speak for our workflow and using captionmax.
I know that they can basically handle anything you send them and that they have their own
dubbing facilities. We have our own “caption inserter”, so we FTP to them a low res “off-line” reference QT with TimeCode
that matches the final master. They create the caption files and email us back a “.cap” file. We load that
into our “caption inserter” and when we output from FCP, the master has captioning on it. No dubs, no fuss. There are other ways to do this, but that’s how we do it.If you’re planning on outputting the caption info from FCP, make sure that your “i/o” box can do it. Not all can. (When it comes to HD… few can. Which is why we have an outboard “inserter” between the FCP and the mastering deck.
Hope this helps.

June 1, 2009 at 2:39 amMark,
Thanks for following up.Can I ask what that your ‘Caption Inserter Box’ is? I’m using a Kona3 card, I would think that since it’s the best, it should pass the CC code.
I guess I was hoping it the workflow would be as easy as just sending them an Uncompressed SD file, have them encode the CC and send it back to me as a file.
I will call the couple of companies referenced in the thread and see what their workflow is.
Thanks guys!

Since you’re dealing with :30’s your idea may work too. In long form, it’s not so easy to
pass back and forth the full rez 90 minute show.Mark

June 2, 2009 at 12:35 pmwe send either a DVD w BITC or h264 w BITC they send back or post an animation codec of the CC line 21 data. line it up in the timeline, crop so just line 21 is present render and output to tape via Kona 3.
Of course I prefer to dupe my sequence before dropping in the animation file.
