Just received my copy of FCP6. I want to copy/clone the system hard drive before installing, but since I’ve only done this w/ a PC and not a MAC before, wanted to be sure I did it right.

If I open up the MAC Hard drive, can I just copy ALL the files to another drive? Would there be any “hidden” files that I would be missing? Is there a “root directory” that I need to worry about??

    Thanks.

Go to http://www.versiontracker.com and download CARBON COPY CLONER. This does the cloning for you, and rather well.

    Grant,

After cloning make sure to test to see that it boots before proceeding with your update. THat is done by selecting your clone in SYSTEM PREFERENCES — STARTUP DISK and telling it to boot from that.

I had a problem with Carbon Copy Cloner before I upgraded to FCS 5.0. I can’t remember what the issue was, but it prompted me to purchase SuperDuper for $30 which has done a great job for me. The issue with CC must have been significant or I would not have paid for SuperDuper.

Hard drive – $160. Carbon Copy Cloner – Free. Pilot error – priceless.

But every next time you want to clone it with Super Duper it takes only 10 minutes,
as it only updates the back up hard drive – copies only what has changed from last time.

I believe that CCC does the same, but still SuperDuper hass slightly better interface and
as well as a number of more-advanced

[Borjis] “how long does it take to clone a drive?”

    It depends on the drive.

It takes longer to fill up saddle tanks on a semi then it does a Honda Civic.

Sorry, for the sly remark but with the price of gas….I had to fit it in somehwere.

CCC has always worked for me. I rotate 2 drives out. Flip flop them with regular back ups weekly.
