  • Clone/Mirror multiple layers in 3D?

Posted by Brian Tetamore on November 30, 2008 at 1:52 am

I have a 3d project where I need to clone several layers and then mirror them. The idea is that the camera would move across (Left to Right) a looping landscape in the background. I’m assuming that in order to “loop” the mountains/background, the left edge must match the right edge as far as the image. Hopefully that made sense.

Is there a way to do this? Maybe there’s an easier way?

Clone them all by slecting them and hitting control-d to duplicate your layers. Keep those new ones selected and pull up the transform properties to mirror them.

    Hi Brian,

If I am understanding you correctly:
You can actually do this with only one photo. Drop your BG photo into a comp. Apply Effects>Distort>Offset. Change X position to the middle of the comp/ Use the Clone tool to remove your seam (now in the middle). Then duplicate the layer>move it to the left or right edge. Parent it to the first layer.

At 00:00 set position KF for layer 1. Move out a couple of seconds and move the layers X position value so that layer 2 is full on screen. End your work area there. Page Down 1 frame and move the 2nd KF there. That way the last frame is also your first frame. Ram preview and you have a seamless loop.

    Looping Background.

Once the left and right edges were the same, you could also just use CC Repetile to duplicate the image.
    Good Luck-Don

The mirror effect doesn’t quite seem to work. I’m probably not explaining this very well. The post from Don Sciore on looping a single image is the right idea.

The problem is that I’m hoping to create the illusion that the Camera is moving Right to Left/Tracking along a landscape in a looped sequence. So, the end result would be the same as a looped still image, HOWEVER, I have multiple layers in 3D that form the landscape (mountains and trees) with snow falling.

    Is this effect not possible?

Absolutely. Just Pre-Compose the layers and follow the same process.

    Good Luck.
