  • Clone Stamp Tool shows changes in Layer Panel but not Composition (& other bugs)

Posted by Jon Miller on November 20, 2024 at 2:17 pm

Having an issue that’s driving me crazy. Trying to paint out a lav cable using the clone stamp tool on a frame-by-frame basis. Was working fine in a previous project file but not After Effects is acting crazy (or maybe I’m missing some obscure setting??)

    1. I open the video layer in the layer panel.
    2. I use the clone stamp tool. Changes appear in the Layer panel.
    3. Changes do NOT appear in the composition panel.
    4. The layer shows that the effect is applied and that a stroke has been made.

    Similar issue I’m also encountering:

    1. Make a stroke using the clone stamp
    2. I Undo

    3. I can see the stroke disappear in the timeline panel under the Paint effect BUT the stroke <b style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>is not visually undone – a sort of phantom stroke that stays despite not being listed anymore.
    4. Weird kind-of workaround: Changing the Effect Opacity under Composition Options to anything other than 100 makes the phantom stroke disappear (and behaves as expected for non-phantom strokes).

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON??? Is this some bug from hell??

    Things I’ve already tried:

    • Clearing Media Cache and restarting software
    • Updating GPU Driver
    • various work arounds (duplicating layer and deleting effects, etc.)

That is super weird. The only thing I can think of and have experienced is that you’re working on a mp4. I’ve experienced issues before when trying to do something quick on an mp4, as soon as i swapped it out for an mov the issues went away. So maybe try converting to an mov or mxf and see what happens?

One thing I realized – somewhat unrelated – is that if I had one of the Clone brush strokes selected in the timeline panel, making a new clone stamp brush stroke in the layer panel replace the selected stroke.

Work around I implemented: Quiting and relaunching After Effects. I found that what was being shown in the Layer panel was what ultimately would render in the composition panel. After quiting and relaunching the composition panel would correctly show what I had been seeing in the layer panel.

@Chris V – Did you find it was really an issue with the mp4 vs mov containers and not the codec? I haven’t been having any other issues with the footage for this project (all XAVC mp4s)
