    In short…

Project shot on a Sony HD camera (sorry, no info available on which model)… HDV footage.

Footage captured (transferred) to a drive by a 3rd party post house.

All of the clips are showing up on the hard drive as QuickTime Movie files… however, some (about 1/2) will not open. FCP doesn’t recognize them as QT files… neither does QuickTime… nor can I open them in MPEG Streamclip.

I’ve also tried to open the offending clips in AE, and I receive the following AE error message: clip Untitled2-3.mov cannot be imported “MooV” are not supported”

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Oh, and apologies if this should be posted on the Sony forum, but I’m assuming it’s not an issue with the camera, but with the capture.

Do the “bad” clips show a preview when you highlight them in finder? If they come up white or with the QT clip icon, might be a codec issue (MooV is one I’ve never heard of), or just never finalized in transcode–meaning they didn’t get repackaged right on transfer or got cut off early when they were being copied to the drive. You should also open the info box and see how the permissions are set. No Access in this case is a bad deal. Worse case scenario, strip of the extension using r-name or similar, and then try the “open with” function. You can always add the extension back on using r-name again, so is non-destructive. Might give you more information though.

    Thanks Josh!

Although the clips have the QT icon, they do not show a preview in the finder. Checked the permissions — read / write no problem. Also tried stripping the extension… no luck.

Hoping the problem can be solved when we go back to the post house who did the original capture. Especially if it’s just a case of finalizing.

Irritating, but if that solves it, then at least I’m only 1 day behind and can still easily hit the deadline.

Huge thanks for the suggestions. If you have any other ideas, please let me know! 😉

From the sound of it, I’ll bet the clips were never fully transferred to the drive sent you. Have post house resend them and CHECK that they preview before they send back. BIG DEAL. Part of being professional in workflow. I know I would’ve gotten slammed if I delivered stuff that didn’t work.

    Good luck.

How large are the files? 2K? 28K? Often when we capture full tapes, and just start it from the beginning but have no outpoint, FCP will capture that until timecode runs out, then it stops, completes that QT, then tries to capture the next chunk. So it starts a file…but if it finds no outpoint, that file remains incomplete. And small.

    Hi Shane!

I actually thought (hoped) that they might just be “incomplete” clips due to size; however, the clips (both the ones that open and the ones that don’t) are between 200 – 300 MB.

Supposedly, they still have everything… and they say that their copy of the clips all open on their end. So… fingers crossed that they’ve actually checked all of the “missing” clips and that they can just transfer them onto a drive (again) for me to start plugging in to the missing spots on Monday.

Still… I can’t help but wonder what went wrong and how to prevent in the future.
