I need to combine video on my TL from cameras that shoot different data rates. Will it result in audio drift or any other problem that might be noticeable on clips where audio sync is critical, eg., when we see lips moving.

Footage will be from Sony Z1u shot in hdv 1440×1080 60i, 14.7 MBps data rate. The other camera is Sony NX5 1440 x 1080 60i, but with a data rate of 9MBps.

PowerPC G5 DP2.3, 4GB DDR SDRAM, ATI X800XT, OSX.4.11, QT 7.5.5, FCStudio2, FCP 6.0.5 Sonnet 5 Bay SATA (RAID or JBOD as needed), ACD 23″ & Sony NTSC Monitor via Matrox v.1

Mixing data rates is fine. Note that the NX5 comes in as ProRes…there is no native AVCHD editing in FCP. So it will be converted to ProRes, and you should use a ProRes sequence set up to match those clips, and then add the HDV footage to that. Better to work in ProRes than HDV sequence…better performance, less crashing.

Thank you. I agree, I’m working in ProRes. I’ll transcode the NX5 footage to ProRes before importing, but I’m wondering if the fact that the NX5 footage was recorded at 9MBps will cause an audio sync or drift problem when syncing with the z1u footage shot with a data rate of 14.7 MBps. The Z1 will be in the TL first.

I’m using clipwrap2 to convert the NX5 footage to ProRes. I will use the option the app. offers to convert the audio to LPCM.

Please verify this in your answer. Specifically, regarding possible audio drift, people talking, on long clips: Because of the fact that the original footage was shot on cameras with different data rates, eg., is audio originally shot at 9MBps going to match the other cameras audio shot at 14.7 MBps with eventual drifting? As mentioned before, the NX5 clips will be transcoded with the audio changed to LPCM in the process.
