Clips crashing
Hi there,
I recently upgraded to Sony Vegas Pro 9 from Pro 8. I use DV AVI footage created using MPEG Streamclip for my editing. In Pro 8 I had no problems with this, the clips were workable and good for my needs. But in Pro 9, every time I click on one file to drag it down to the timeline, it takes an age. Like the little blur circle around my mouse starts and the “not responding” message comes up. The clip eventually loads, and I’m able to work with it, but this happens each and every time I click on a clip.
On average the clip size is 2-4 minutes so in terms of mb, they are 800-900 mb’s each. I usually keep these files in a 1TB hard drive, and not on my internal drives.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure that you are using Vegas Pro 9.0e (the latest). DV AVI files should load and edit very smoothly. Perhaps something about the way MPEG Slipstream made the AVI files doesn’t agree with Vegas 9 even though it worked in Vegas 8.

Yes I just downloaded that update and nothing has changed, unfortunately. I ended up having to reinstall Vegas and Windows, I keep my footage on a WD Mybook with 1tb of space which has always worked well in the past. My clips still load at a glacial rate and it’s very hard to get anything done. I haven’t installed any codecs yet, as I didn’t want them to interfere with fixing this problem.

Try moving one of the clips to an internal hard drive and see if it loads faster. If not, you might have to find an alternative workflow that doesn’t include MPEG Slipstream.
