Clipping video when importing
I’ve been having issues when importing from a JVC cam that I use as a deck into my Mac Book Pro, 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo. The video is fast and clipping, and it seems its my firewire port doing this. I have 3 external harddrives hooked up, one Lacie at 500Gigs, one WD at 500 and another WD at 320. When I switch my firewire into one of the WD’s, I can import ok (at normal speed), but when my cam is plugged directly into my Mac via 400 firewire and even my Lacie (which is weird) I get fast clipping footage, it’s like it’s skipping along, (like – ew eu eh eh ew eh, you know, when someone is talking). I’m thinking I should buy a Firewire Hub maybe? I was looking into a Belkin 6 Port. Any other suggestions?

I don’t think a firewire hub is the answer.
Your firewire bandwidth is being divided by too many devices connected at the same time.
You should consider getting an ExpressCard expansion slot firewire card. Then you will have 2 firewire paths.
I don’t have experience with these, so I can’t suggest a brand, but here’s an example of what they look like:

You’ve heard the term “dropping frames” right? That’s what’s going on because as Steven suggests your drives cannot keep up. Consider moving to SATA drives and get yourself an express card, this would solve this problem and meanwhile give you more speed and more realtime capability. Firewire is so 20th century…

Thanks Steven, and yes David, yep, have had dropped frames of course, but it always happened while doin play back, and while importing, but with a warning popup message….I didn’t realize it could do it to an entire batch like that.
I did however go out today to the Apple store and picked up an eSATA Expresscard. So far so good.
