  • Clip timecode and Tape timecode do not match…

Posted by Iann Mcgill on June 4, 2008 at 3:13 pm

    Hi,
We are reconstituting a project that is years old to update its look. I have received a dvd with my Avid project and bins, along with all of the tapes. Whoever originally created the project, I’m thinking didn’t really know what they were doing, considering I have over 4 hours of media, labeled with all of the same tape name. I have gone through for the most part and found the media on its specific tape and modifed the tape name so that it is correct. The problem I am having now, is that some of the timecodes that are associated with the clips (that are in the bin), do not match the timecode on the tape. I am thinking A)they made duplicates of the original tapes and sent me those, or B)they quite possibly digitized the video in free-run with no deck associated. Is there anyway I can modify the clips timecode manually, in the bin, so that I can capture the footage and sync it back up to the media in the bin.

    Thank you,
    Iann.

If you have the correct numbers, you can make a sequence with those new numbers with the clip in it and then make a submaster clip of it.
    I think, anyway.
Sounds like it’d be must less frustrating to just tear into a new project cold turkey. That’s usually quicker than sifting through others’ work.

Normally, I wouldn’t have much problem doing that, but in this case, it’s kind of a long sequence, it’s already gone through the gauntlet of government approvals, and the turn-around is fairly quick.

Hmm, I am open to all suggestions. You would think there would be some way just to type in your in/out on the new clip of the time code.

Could I possibly delete the old clip, redig the new clip, name it the exact same name as the old clip and then, relink?

Select the clip with the wrong timecode, right click, and choose Modify. You can now offset the start or ending timecode to match what’s on the tape. You’ll get a lot of warnings when you do, so just click through them. Then your clip timecode should match the tape.

You might have to select the clip and Unlink it first, then modify. I’d test it with one clip to make sure it works, then work your way through the rest.

Let us know if it works.

    Michael.

Do you have a reference copy of the original program? If so, capture it and cut it in on an upper track.

Now, go to one of your offending clips and find an identifiable frame.

Find the same frame on the source tape.

Use the timecode calculator under the tools menu to calculate the difference betwwen the TC on tape and the TC on the clip. Let’s just say it’s 3:15:02 difference.

Now follow the above advice and modify the clip incrementing or decrementing the clip by that amount.

The beauty here is that assuming they captured the tapes in one fell swoop, you should be able to apply the same offset to every clip from that tape.
