    Hello,

I am trying to speed up some of my footage in the timeline. However, whenever I double click on the clip and then try adjusting its speed in the motion tab, I get this error:

Unable to complete command. A conflict occurred during a trim operation.

Does anyone know what this means?

I should note that this clip is in my second layer of video (v2). I don’t run into this problem when I try with clips in the first layer (v1). Unfortunately, I need to keep this clip in the second layer for my purposes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FCP 7 makes this a lot easier, and will not give you this error as it just adjusts the timeline according to your preferences…

If you do your speed changes in the same layers in FCP 5 you’ll see this error. It’s because you’ll be lenghthening the sequence for slow mo, and shortening them for a faster playback, so FCP doesn’t allow you to do this in the event you’d go out of sync… Just put them above the Layers you have material already in, or better yet, from the View Menu select Match frame/ source file. Make the changes in the viewer. This will not affect the master clip in your browser at all… then simply edit the speed changed video into your sequence.

    Hey Jerry,

    Thanks for responding.

Interestingly, I am using FCP7. When I open a clip from the sequence in the viewer, the motion tab doesn’t allow me to adjust the speed.

The only way I seem to be able to adjust the speed is by opening it from the browser into the viewer, adjusting the speed and then dragging it into the sequence. This is kind of cumbersome as I’m trying to make adjustments on the fly and don’t want to have to go through all of those steps every time I change the clip speed.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks for the help,
    Sam

Select the clip in the Timeline, then type cmd+j to open the Change speed dialog box. From there in FCP 7 you can select ripple sequence or not.. This is for constant changes only. From the Viewer whether you’ve sent the clip it contains from the browser or the timeline, select the Motion tab and at the bottom of the parameter settings there, you can change the speed either constant or variable.
