I name my clip using description, scene and take.

    Description: m.div
    Scene: tim class
    Take: 03

The clip name appears as follows in the browser: m.div_tim class_03 . When I look at the clip on the disk its name appears like this:

    m.div_tim class_03.div_tim class_03.

What’s going on? It doesn’t add the extra info to the name (in the finder) if I’m not using the “scene” field in naming the clip. It also has just recently started doing this. I’ve never seen this behavior before in Final Cut.

I’ve trashed my prefs but there is no change. Any idea?

    hey jeffrey,
i had the same issue a few months ago and it seems to have something to do with the period(.) in the clip name. in our experience, when we captured our clips the corresponding file would be renamed with a repeat of whatever followed the period.
for example: john sits down. take one
would be renamed: john sits down. take one. take one. take one
we were working hi res throughout the project and it didn’t cause us any grief. i’m not sure if it would have any effect in an offline to online scenario.

    Mark,

Thank you so much. You are exactly right. I removed the “.” and everything works correctly. Thanks for your insight.

[Mark Fason] “i’m not sure if it would have any effect in an offline to online scenario.”

Renaming clips can be a disaster in an “off-line to on-line” scenario.

If you want to add descriptive info to the clip, the best place to put it is in the “comments” column… not the name!

Your clipname is the filename which FCP uses to find the clip. That should NEVER change… unless you want to spend hours figuring out why your media went off-line and “where did it go?”.
