Clip Markers with editing notes that move with clip?
Posted by David Fleury on September 18, 2010 at 2:51 pmI REALLY need a way to associate some kind of marker with a clip that I can put editing notes on that will travel with a clip when it is moved, like you can with AVID.
This seems like such a simple feature I cant believe PP does not seem to offer it. I see you can add a marker in the source window but it does not seem like you can add notes to it.
Can anybody tell me how to do this or maybe provide a workaround or idea that you use in replace of this?
Thanks!

September 19, 2010 at 4:15 pmCan’t you double click a clip from the sequence to load it into the source viewer and add markers to it there? you should then be able to add comments to those markers as well.
These should then be clip markers that will move with the clip, as opposed to sequence markers which are based solely and locked in sequence time.

September 19, 2010 at 4:38 pmHiya…
I stand corrected.
While you can add clip markers, there is no comment function, on the clip side.
A yucky workaround is to nest the clip.
Add marks and comments in the nested sequence as sequence markers.
In the main timeline this will then appear as a “clip mark” and appear within and move with the clip.
However, you will have to enter the nest to review the comments. It’s stinky, but it’s better than no option at all.
I would suggest making that feature request, my guess is that is an easy one to implement.Alex

July 3, 2011 at 12:51 amI’ve made a feature request for this, and I hope more people do as well.
I’m one of the many FCP editors looking into switching to PPro since FCPX came out and so far I’ve been extremely impressed. The lack of editable clip markers is the very first thing that has given me pause.
It may seem like a little thing but in FCP I use this feature constantly. The very first thing I do when I’m starting a new project (well, after importing the footage and setting up some bins) is go through and watch all my clips and mark them up extensively. I end up with a huge collection of markers (each with tons of comments about performance, technical issues, etc.) long before I add anything at all to my first sequence.
I can’t even imagine doing a major project without this step. I’d just be lost.
Have any PPro editors out there come up with a work-around other than–possibly hundreds!–of nested sequences (very, very messy)? Any alternate way to accommodate/approximate this workflow?
I know Adobe people read this forum (which, as others have mentioned, is very nice to know!) so I thought I’d resurrect this old thread just to say that I’m loving PPro so far and I can foresee switching being quite painless save this one catch.

January 19, 2012 at 9:05 amI really, really need this feature (and yes, Todd, I have put in a request). Hopefully this will be offered with the upcoming next edition.
The sequence markers are just cumbersome, because they stick to the position of the clip. You just want to be able to move/rearrange clips on the timeline after you’ve sync’d up the audio and added commentary to them.

August 19, 2015 at 8:02 pmHas this feature request been implemented yet into Premiere Pro CC? I realize this is an old thread but I have finally migrated to PPCC and would really like a clean way to make technical notes/comments to my clips in the timeline as I organize and edit a large project.

August 19, 2015 at 11:55 pmPrelude will do a very good job of this. Unfortunately, nearly every project I work on starts with audio sync in Pluraleyes and you can’t bring an xml into Prelude.
I still sometimes log interviews in Prelude using just the camera audio (if you bring clips into Prelude while the Premiere sequence is open you can watch the comments appear in Premiere – you don’t even need to save / import).
Like a lot of things adobe – works great, seems designed for limited use cases.

October 18, 2018 at 6:09 amPREMIERE PRO Hit M to Mark clip selected (No clip selected adds a Sequence Marker which does not move with clips when ripple edited.) ALT-Click Marker in SOURCE Panel to drag it out. Dbl-click to add NAME and COMMENTS that DO move with the clip. – YES, COMMENTS — Comments that move with the clip rather than stay stuck to the timeline. Dbl-click in Source Panel to edit. The comments also show when hovering over the Marker in Source panel – AND Timeline, too!
