  • Clip Markers not functioning properly in sequence

Posted by Sara Booth on January 11, 2008 at 6:44 pm

    Hello,
I’ve found a big problem with using markers in FCP, and hopefully someone can help me solve it. We’ve been adding markers to selects laid down on the timeline. The markers were added to the clip itself (by highlighting and pressing M), not to the sequence. We did it this way because sequence markers don’t maintain sync to the clip, so if we added or deleted something the markers would no longer be useful. The problem is,

1.these markers aren’t showing up in the Browser, and
    2. we can only jump between markers when the clips in the timeline are selected, and
    3. we can’t read the name of the markers in the Canvas window.

Is there a way to make clip markers function better in a sequence? Or a way to link sequence markers to particular clips in timeline, so that it will move in time as clips are inserted or removed?

Thank you so much creative moo-ers! I hope one of you can help me solve this issue.

    bests,
    Sara

    1. If you drag the marked clips from your sequence back into the browser they will display all the markers you’ve put in.

    2. I see no work around for this. Unless anyone else has a suggestion you are stuck with command A before your moves.

    3. This as well I see no work around. Perhaps someone has an answer.

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for your comments. The problem with dragging the clips back into the browser is that we’ve had alot of problems with lost reference files, so clips in sequences wouldn’t match frame to the clip in the browser. I wouldn’t want to lose any references between clips in the browser and other sequences.

No work arounds for the other two?

    thanks,
    Sara

Yeah I hear you. It isn’t a pretty work around. I think for this project you’re stuck. For the future it may work for you. You can also lay down markers during the log and capture process or while previewing clips in viewer.

The process of pulling selects is highly subjective what’s best is what works for you.

Unfortunately that’s the way FCP is designed but you’re not alone Sara in wanting these things! Hopefully Apple will improve clip markers in a future version.
