Clip Markers and XMP
So, what are the proper settings for working off two systems with one file that can be shared? markers keep disappearing and its not cool!
Write XMP ID to files on import (OFF)
Write clip markers to XMP (ON)
Enable clip and XMP Metadate linking (ON)
Include captions on import (ON) -

Write XMP ID to files on import This essentially writes a serial number to each video or audio file on import. To my understanding this helps Premiere prevent the import of duplicate media (like when importing XMLs?) and I’ve been told is essential to use in multi-editor workflows.
Write clip markers to XMP — Basically clip markers can be stored in two ways: either in the xmp data on the actual clip itself (ie. where the clip lives in finder) or in the Premiere project file.
“Clip” Metadata (as Adobe calls it)
- Write Clip Markers to XMP box is unchecked (off)
- this is the workflow for people sharing project files on separate drives, as markers are stored in the project file
- markers are only searchable in the markers panel (and only visible in the markers panel if the clip or sequence is selected)
“File” Metadata (as Adobe calls it)
- Write Clip Markers to XMP box is checked (on)
- perhaps a good workflow for people sharing clips on a server or if you’re copying the clips over to a second drive after you log with markers. Markers live on the actual media so if you share a premiere project file to someone after putting a marker on a clip, they won’t be able to see it/have that information.
- Allows you to search text on markers from the search function in the project panel (this is the one advantage of this option in my opinion, but not that big of an advantage)
Not sure about the last two but I’d think it’s safe to leave them on. Hope this helps!
