Client needs AVI for “Inscriber” system. I’m on a Mac. ???
I’m running AE7 for OSX, which doesn’t seem to support AVI export.
My client has requested files in AVI format, for the PC based “Inscriber” (I’m not familiar with it)1. Can I get an AVI out of a Mac ver AE?
2. I can convert to AVI in QT pro, but my compression options are very limited. Is there a better way?
3. They need these for lower thirds, but the qt conversion doesn’t support alpha channel (since it makes it DVCPRO50.) Does AVI even support an alpha?Thanks!

Yes, some hardware-specific CoDecs and alternative open source CoDecs such as HuffYUV do (it’s still a hack, as they only use AVI containers to enclose their own data types). Since you are on a Mac, your chances to get a working AVI are close to zero. You really, really need at least convert your QTs on a Win PC. Shouldn’t be hard to find someone who could do it.

I just finished installing Flip4Mac’s trial version, but I can’t for the life of me distill wether or not it supports an alpha. I tried exporting a 32bit qt to wmv in standard settings, but AE won’t even import it, and I didn’t see any settings that suggest it has an alpha channel. This seems surprisingly difficult to simply get a wmv or avi with an alpha to my PC-based client. Any clues? I’m just trying to create a simple lower third for them.Alas, it’s always the “quick little request” that kills ya. 🙂

WMV cannot contain Alpha, in that regard it’s even worse than AVI. I really suggest you try to find someone with a PC who can do the conversion easily before your have scratched your head to a serious bleed… Seems the smoothest solution.

Why don’t you export 32bit TGA sequence. His inscriber system should be able to convert those into AVIs that he can use.

over TGA, PNG suports lossless compression as well as RGBA. its what i use for rendering 3d sequences to load into after effects.

Do it as a Targa Sequence.
INscriber is a CG application, not an NLE. It’s been a few versions since I worked with Insriber but I don’t recall it working with AVIs. Maybe Insriber Title Motion does?
I’m betting that the lower thirds you’re creating are BG for the text he’ll add later. His workpath, using Inscriber, will be to add your lower thirds to the timeline, then on a higher track, create an inscriber file with the text to go over it.
Regardless, if you need export a bit of video with Alpha from AE for PC editing. Go with creating A Targa Sequence — that supports Alpha Channel. In most NLE, like Premiere and Premiere Pro, the Targa Seq can be imported as a single video file with Alpha in tact.
