I’m doing a model which has clear plastic components. I’ve been trying to get the texture right and struggling when I noticed the original plastic itself distorts everything behind it so it runs the length of the component – sort of streaks of light representing the light coming through the plastic itself. I guess this is a result of the manufacturing process.

The light passing through the plastic is often split into a spectrum (like a rainbow) around the edges rather than white.

Any tips if I am creating this using a texture?

    Cheers

The distortion you’re describing sounds like like an anisotropic effect, which is caused by parallel scratches in a surface — like brushed steel. But I’m not exactly sure what you mean. Can you post a pic?

I can’t post a pic due to a confidentiality agreement.

I’m struggling to sort this one, and am having all sorts of trouble with the illumination etc.

I think I can emulate the surface properties using an environment map, but the transparency is behaving very oddly – there is a tube in the middle of the plastic barrel that has a graphic on – appears black every time, whatever I do.

    Thanks for the reply though!

Hmm, maybe you need to increase the ray depth and/or reflection depth in your render options?

    I’ll give that a go – cheers.
