Hi folks, I have been given some old B&W video from the ’70’s that my father had someone else transfer to dvd for him some time ago. I have ripped the video and transcoded it to a 10 bit uncompressed format. My question is the video, as one would expect, has not been spared the ravages of time. It’s a little washed out and somewhat blurry (artifacts from the original VHS tapes) and there is some hint of noise.

My question is, for a newbee, is what plug-ins should I use to clean up and sharpen the footage? Any advise would be greatly appreciated…thanx again.

First David, do you have the necessary raid to playback 10-bit uncompressed without dropping frames? Even if you do, transcoding material off of a DVD to 10-bit uncompressed is serious overkill. It does not make the video better, it just makes the files much bigger. In this case, DV50 would be just fine.

Now, on to your question… The 3-way color correction filter is everyone’s first best choice. I’m almost 100% certain that your black levels are probably not set properly to 100. That’s the slider under the far left color wheel. If you master the 3-way CC you’re well on your way, so here’s a great lesson that will help you out immensely: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/cc_legal_fcp4.html.

Wow!! Thank you. I learned something of real value here. I always thought “more is better”, when it came to transcoding this type of footage. I’ll try what you suggested and let you know how it goes from here. Thanx again.

Yes David, that is a very common misconception. As you delve deeper into the world of video and post, you will learn to that managing bits and bytes efficiently and effectively is a huge part of the job.
