Does anyone know how to clean them? One of mine in the beginning of some footage I filmed has green bars across the screen and once in a while something on my camera will pop up during then, saying tape needs cleaning.

You don’t clean tapes, you clean the tape heads of your deck or camera with a head cleaner which you can buy. If that doesn’t work you need to have the heads cleaned professionally at a camera repair center.

The specific tape gets the same reaction on any camera I play it on. All of my other tapes are fine on any camera.

Then it’s possible the tape was recorded with dirty tape heads. In that case take the tape to a professional post-production place- they might be able to save your footage and dub it onto a clear tape. There’s no way to clean tapes.

Find someone with a Sony DSR2000 tape deck. It has a special circuitry that will play tapes that no other deck will play. Few people know about this but it is the coolest thing that Sony has ever done. There is a special playback mode to accomplish this.

I have a sony camcorder, trv-19. It plays and records on new tapes without a problem. However, on some old tapes, it will only play. I get the ‘dirty tape’ mmessage when I try to record.
First, if the tape is dirty, why would it play but not record? Dirty is dirty, no matter what you’re trying to do, right?
These ‘problem’ tapes are under 3 years old, and have only been recorded on once. If I knew these tapes were essntially disposable, I would not have bought this format for a camcorder, this can get really expensive. I have one $15 sony memory tape, used once, now reads ‘dirty tape’. That really sucks!
