clean up unused files?
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on March 9, 2010 at 3:13 amIs it possible to clean up (read: remove) all the files not used in a project? I know I can do a sweep in the media pool, but this only removes the indexes, not the files.
I’d like to do this when a project is completed, I want to back it up and not have to back up files/media that have not been used in the project.

March 9, 2010 at 10:28 amStep #1 is to click the lightning bolt (top left of the Project Media tab) to remove all unused media from the project.
Step #2 is to do a “Save As”.
When the requester box comes up, choose a new folder and make sure to click the box that says “Copy media with project”.
Follow the prompts that come up.
The result is a backed up project that contains all source material. -

March 9, 2010 at 11:54 amAlso the nice thing about the save as (with media) is that it takes all the sources like music and clips, etc. and puts them all into one directory instead of having them dispersed all over your hard drive.
It does not however take the head and tail off of M2t clips even though even if you’ve checked that option box. So if you use 20 seconds from a 20 minute clip, it save the entire 20 minute clip. -

March 9, 2010 at 12:11 pmRoger, thanks for the tip.
I don’t do HDV yet so I had no idea that was an issue with that format.
Sounds like a good idea for a suggestion for Sony to implement in a future update. -

This raises one question. I always create sub folders for audio, images, renders, etc to organize my files. will I lose my subfolder organization by doing what Roger suggests?

March 9, 2010 at 1:05 pmYou will loose all those separate folders when doing a save as. It puts everything into the one directory you do the save as. Not such a bad thing though.
Sony says it can’t cut the head and tail of the mt2 files because of the nature of the file. However you can highlight a clip and do a render as and save just that portion of a clip as a new file. So I’m not sure why Sony can’t do that as well with some sort of feature in Vegas.

You’re right, it’s not a big deal as I can simply recreate folders and move files by file type.

VASST Ultimate S Pro will do this for you in two clicks. On the Audit tab is a tool to Selective Delete Unused Media from hard Drive. The first click finds all the media not being used and allows you to deselect some for exclusion, and the second click deletes them from the media pool and hard drive. It also has tool to Remove Unused Takes. This tool should be run first so that it frees up even more media for deletion that sweep media pool wouldn’t find.

Hmmmm… it’s been a few times now that I’ve heard about Vaast ultimate Pro S being so handy.
I just may have to open the wallet and purchase this tool.
Thanks again,Gilles
