I have looked on line an in the cow, and either I’m just not using the correct terms, or similar issues come up, but aren’t the problem I’m trying to solve. I’m more of a PS guy and delve into Illustrator as needed, so I’m sure I am missing something basic. For the record, I have tried the Shape Builder tool (didn’t work – maybe only with closed path objects?), the eraser tool (it trims the line, but not to the shape of the circle, and all of the Pathfinder options (with the line both in the back and in the front). A picture is worth a thousand words, but I want a line with a stroke to cleanly be trimmed by another object (in this case a circle, both with a stroke and without a stroke). I created the bottom goals by adding another circle with no fill and a white stroke to hide the line segment, but that seems like a hack.

    Thank you,

    Pauley

You can use the Shape Builder tool to achieve this in illustrator!

Here are some of the steps on how to do it:

    1. Draw the circle using the Ellipse tool.
    2. Draw a straight line that intersects the circle.
    3. Select the circle and line, and then select the Shape Builder tool from the Toolbar.
    4. Click and drag with the Shape Builder tool along the intersection point of the circle and line to create a smooth, curved line.
    5. Alternatively, you can use the Eraser tool to erase the excess lines and create the curve.

You can also use the Pathfinder tool to merge the 2 shapes but I will not fully recommend it since it will not give you the most desired results. For more info on how to use the Ellipse Tool in details, I found a video that can help you with that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFSulCxQsqo
