Body language certainly conveys a lot of meta-data that we process unconsciously. If you think about it, this is a major factor in the use of any on-camera presenter. Historically, going back to the Kennedy-Nixon Presidential debate, the conventional wisdom is that the more telegenic and poised Kennedy won that debate on TV, but to audiences that only listened via radio, the consensus was that Nixon won.

as for the study – aah – come on. This is old and obvious news.

Sarah Brightman became the biggest opera singer in history because she is hot, not because she is the greatest opera singer of all time. No one wants to look at the fat old lady (as I rememeber when I was growning up – who were all those old fat ladies ?).

Same applies to Ron Lindeboom’s favorite genre of music “Country AND Western”. Singers like Taylor Swift are a joke compared to the legends of country music, with the great singers of the past. But she looks much nicer, and has a better stage performance than they did.

And of course this applies to rock and pop music as well.
AND IT APPLIES TO US. How many of us have seen our “competitors” who know a fraction of what we know, or have poor skills, succeed way beyond what you can do. Doesn’t seem fair, does it ? Only because they knew how to PRESENT themselves better than you, do a better “song and dance” for the client – and so “they” were chosen instead of you, even though you have better skills in shooting, lighting, editing, etc.

So for those sitting in the basement, honing their skills, just remember, you better work on your social graces at the same time !
