Classic EWF “September” video feedback effect in FCPX or Motion?
Long ago I came up with a method to imitate the same video feedback effect as in the Earth Wind and Fire video for “September”. I forgot my home brewed recipe, and poking around FCPX and Motion have not been able to replicate it. I think I remember whatever I did, I did to a keyed image, to get that nice repeating effect off to one side. I think it was an unorthodox application of maybe a replicator or a tiling effect but I’m stumped at how younger me did it.
I could use some help now to do it again, preferably with the built-in effects in FCPX or Motion, not spending money for a dedicated plug-in. Help me, Obi-Wan COW-nobi!

Oh man, having grown up in the 60s & 70s that takes me back. I’ve not seen that done in ages. I’ll search around for a tutorial somewhere. Maybe drop Ripple Training for Final Cut Bro a line and maybe one of them will do a tutorial.

A clue has emerged: on one of my older iMacs, this effect still exists but I can’t find a way to publish or export the effect out. This is a green grab of part of it; does it help any of you to figure out how it was originally created?

Create a replicator of your object/image, keyframe it over time to spread backwards and grow.
