Just so we all know, I did search for this topic and found one other fellow who asked about a similar topic and got no reply…

I also found one thread where Graeme pointed out that FCP clamps DV footage when it imports it and converts it from YCrCb to RGB…

But I’ve been working with some XDcam (EX) footage and it has some levels above and below clip even after it’s placed on the timeline (so it wasn’t dumped on import)…and the RGB parade shows me the material and there is detail there. The problem is that when we drop the levels or RGB Balance filter on the clip…it immediately clamps off the out of gamut content and makes it unrecoverable. This is before we touch a control BTW…

Is there a way to salvage the information that the RGB parade is showing me? It’s frustrating to see that the detail is apparent in the display, then not be able to recover it.

    Thanks

Does the 3 way CC do the same thing? I presume you are referring to peak white information above 100% and not black levels.

    Hi Tim.
A couple of things you might try. Make sure that you go into Sequence>Settings>Video Processing>Process Maximum White as [Super White]. This should prevent the software from clipping off the top of the white information abd loosing detail whenever you add any kind of a filter to the clip. From here you should be able to use the 3-Way CC to bring the levels under control without clipping the detail out of the whites. I’m guessing that unless the levels from the Sony camera are WAY high, it should work. You can also try the Highlight/Shadow Gamma filter from Too Much Too Soon. It will allow you to adjust the white Gamma without affecting the overall color balance. It’s a free download. TMTS has quite a few useful filters for free. Google TMTS Filter. Lyric Image Controls Shadow/Highlight filter might do the trick as well. Another free filter.

    Thanks Tom and Michael…

Actually there were some super whites and we tried setting the super white designation in the sequence settings panel, but the info I mourn the loss of most is the super-black. If it was just clipped off and gone that would be one thing but it cruelly taunts me with the appearance of detail below 0 black in the blue channel in the RGB parade display…and when we apply the levels or the RGB Balance filter to bring it back from the depths, the top and bottom of the RGB parade display turn gray (from black) and all waveform below zero is heartlessly ripped from my grasp…aaargh!

    Annoying.

    Hi Tim,
The problem may be because the RGB balance filter works only in 8b RGB.
If you use the 3W-CC you will be able to work in 10b YUV. The clipping it shouldn’t happens.
There is a bit of misunderstanding about “Super-Whites”.
Nattress clearly states in his article “Video levels in FCP”:
The PROCESS MAXIMUM WHITES AS..” setting does not affect video renders or video footage.
    Only stills.
