    Hi

    I have a question about exporting again….. 🙂

On my canvas/timeline/viewer within final cut all is good. I have my frame size set to 4:3 at 768 x 576.
In my export settings I have the export frame size set to 768 x 576, but there is something going on because in one of my shots I have a circle visible. Within final cut it’s a circle, but on the exported quicktime the circle has been squashed slightly from the sides making it an oval, even though the frame size is the same.

    Anyone know what causes this?

I’ve tried exporting out with a square pixel ratio, etc… but nothing seems to help.
I do find it strange in the export settings that I can choose a frame size of 768 x 576, 4:3 but the pixel ratio I only have the option of 720 x 576. I think that’s what it might be but I don’t know what I should do to solve it.

    Thanks

You need to learn about pixel aspect ratio. DV uses rectangular pixels. Computers use square pixels. The display in FCP is by default corrected to compensate for the difference. This can be switched off and on the Viewer and the Canvas. The QuickTime player needs to be told that the pixel aspect ratio is not square. You can do this in the movie properties window if you want, but it makes no real difference to the file, just how it’s displayed in the QT player.

    All the best,

    Tom

I can’t find any option in quicktime to switch the pixel ratio.

But from what you’ve said, my computer is squashing the circle because the pixel ratio is set to a rectangular pixel ratio, which should mean it will look ok when playing on a dvd.

Is there anything in the export settings for quicktime that will enable the movie to be exported correctly for viewing on a computer screen? Should I be choosing square pixel ratios for everything?

    Thanks

It will look correct on a DVD.

Only by changing the frame size or compressing it with an encoder that corrects for the pixel aspect difference like Compressor.

No, you should not choose square pixels for everything because that’s not what your media is. You should google the subject for more comprehensive understanding of video formats.

    All the best,
