I’m confused. I’ve read the adobe aftereffectsCS3 color management pdf, and it reads:”You likely want to output to the log-encoded Cineon format”.

so: the Cineon sequence is a log format, right?

Talking to the film lab today, and it sounds as if thats not quite true. I sent some DPX frames over and they are asking for those images to be in a log format. After some discussion, I nested the composition, and applied the cineon converter to the entire thing, Lin to Log, but that seems to contradict what the PDF is saying, so…

    a bit confused

The real question: “Is a Cineon sequence in a log format?”

    here is the article:

Cineon/DPX files can have their values encoded either in Log or Linear space. Log allows for a more efficient use of the available values. I’m not entirely clear on the details of encoding Log Cineon files out of AE CS3, it seems that Adobes recommends that you use the proper color profile if you know what film stock your image sequence will be printed on (assuming you have the proper color profile available) but I don’t know whether this results in a Log encoded Cineon file…

Otherwise you can set black and white points manually based on criteria that the Film Lab should be able to provide you, these can be set in the Color Management portion of the Output Module if you tell AE not to use a profile.

To clarify, this is for Log encoded Cineon files with superwhites.

is there a technical manual regarding digital cinema, and especially log to lin/lin to log conversions?

When color is rendered using ICC profiles in the AE Output Module, the resultant Cineon files will be log encoded, not linear.
