Cinema Feeling in HDTV?
Posted by Michael Stevens on December 29, 2007 at 6:58 amHi,
I have a small question to the part of “Post Production.” When I see the pictures, which came out of a “cinema-camera” they are not very special. But after Post Production, they look really like “Cinema-Scenes”. Do you know what I mean? I made a scene in 3D, but I don’t know what I can do, that it has a little bit of “cinema-feeling”.
I rendered it in the format 1280 x 544 (here in 800 x …). COuld you give me tips, what I can do in after effects, to get more this kind of feeling? That would be fantastic. Thx!
What should I do with the contrast, or with the specular?
Thanks for each tip..
Bye and happy new year 😉

December 29, 2007 at 3:56 pmIf it’s purely colour grading you’re referring to then a good
place to start is ‘S’ing the Curves’. This is the black/white
levels crunching process which gives movies that ‘contrasty’
look – a contrasty look which HDV lenses try to do in-camera.Effects/Adjust/Curves – in lower-left of the grid
click to create a pointer and then drag it slightly right.
Do the same in the top-right corner and drag it left. Work
1×1 block in so you’re able to create a slight ‘S’ shape out
of the co-ords. Basic Levels work will achieve something
similar. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your scopes,
especially if it’s a SD project.It’s possible to S-shape the curves in-camera but they’re
not because it’s impossible to retrieve the data (lurking
in the now crunched black/white areas) in post – it’s far more
prudent to supply the post guys with a slighter under-exposed
image so they have a choice. With HD this is imperative.Darren.

December 30, 2007 at 7:14 amHi Michael,
Nice scene!
I would follow the great advices you already got from Daren & Lutz.
Personally I would add a DOP. This would get rid a bit of the too clean look and soften your windows in the BG.
Also showing a little more details on the crash wall looked quite nice when I tried it with your image.
Play with the Gamma/Pedestal/Gain effect it’s the mother of color grading;-)

December 30, 2007 at 2:43 pmHi!
Thanks for the tipps. They are really helpful. After the weekend and the week after sylvester I try it out.
@Serge Hamad:
What is DOP? Depth of ….? THought you ment DOF!?@Darren Edwards:
Yes, that sounds great, will be tested definitly… I will post results 🙂@Thorsten Miess:
Great PDF File..thx@Lutz Dieckmann:
The point with the software… In future I will buy this things perhaps, but I am only a student and have no commercial projects, so it is non-profit…The thing with the main frame is a good idea, but could it be, that it will be unsharpen with time? When I look the trailers on apple.com and look them for picture 2 picture they are very sharpen, but I can’t see the reason for the cinema-look. But I try the things out you told me 🙂
Will post results so fast I can ….

December 31, 2007 at 12:11 amOne of the reasons for a simulated cinema look is our “learned viewing”.
Let me tell one thing in front. I hope I remember it right from my times at the university. Forgive me if I tell some bulls….;-))If you look at single frame you don

SORRY for the bad compression and the low size. Its no try for the cinema look, but so you can see which result should be made in this effect.
Bye. How I told you, i try all results and post them here…
Have fun 🙂

January 5, 2008 at 12:25 amI have looked at your film. Looks nice but not as a film. The movement is computerlike. Imagine if you could do this with a real 35mm. Make it slower, add flaws. A real camera is never as straight as a computer.
Thats the trick.
