can anyone help me understand how to bring cinema 4d objects into after effects ( I am using C4D XL 6.0 and AE 5.5 on mac os 10.3.4). My desire is to create and light objects in C4D and animate them within AE. Is this possible? Do I need to create a movie in C4D or just an image? What format(s) are best, etc.

    Many thanks….

AE will not accept objects. It only works with 2D flat planes, period. There are plug-ins that render what appears to be some 3D objects only because they sync up with the AE cam. One of those is Invigorator. It will accept some object formats but the control is extremely limited.

The normal workflow is to do all 3D animation in C4D and render out your final render in multiple passes for control then composite those in AE. You can export your C4D cam data so that whatever you add to it in AE will sync up though.

    Hi,
AE project export and Multipass Rendering is only supported since R7. I recommend getting a later release of CINEMA for this type of work.
    Cheers
