Hi, I’m a long time maya user and have been working at a company that uses both after effects and cinema 4d.

I’m on an Intel Mac running OS 10.4.10, AE 8 (CS3) and Cinema 4d version 10.

This should be stupid easy. Cinema 4d has a few file types listed under the file>export menu.. but no after effects comp.. So I try the render settings dialog in C4D.. again, no mention of AE anything..

Certainly AE doesn’t natively import C4D files, but i figured it was worth checking, but of course C4D files are not importable into.

there is a aftereffects plugin w/i the Maxon/Exchange Plugins/ folder, but it’s for AE 6.5, and dropping this into after effects’ plugin folder didn’t seem to open any doors of interopability between c4d and AE.

can someone please tell me what the protocal is to bring C4D scenes into After Effects?

The export settings are in Cinema’s render>save properties. You’ll see a check box for “compositing project file” and a drop-down of the available compositor options, including AE. Check the box and click the “save” button to save out an .aec file.

When you import or open the .aec in AE, the plugin will take over and automatically import your Cinema camera, lights, render passes, and what ever else you’ve set up for export (e.g., 3D data tags). If you have multi-pass set up then the plugin will import the passes, add them to your composition, and set up the appropriate transfer modes.

If you don’t have the plugin for CS3, here is a link for the download.

    Hope this helps,
