We work with a trade show company makes all our booth layouts using Accurender 3 and AutoCAD to do their renderings and cad drawings. We could use some 3D software in-house as well. I’ve done some prelimary investigation and it looks like I could find a lot more user support for either Cinema 4D or Lightwave. From an After Effects perspective, appears that Cinema 4D is the favorite, but from a Photoshop perspective Lightwave.

We would like to show multiple views of our booth as there in the design development stage and perhaps down the road animate them with After Effects.
What is the opinions of the group here on working with either?

C4d is more integrated with AE : you can import cameras directly in AE, and use it to integrate 2D elements in the moving scene (picture in a tv screen, text on a wall etc) … and i don’t understand what you mean when you say that lightwave is more adapted to photoshop ?

What I mean by Lightwave is more adapted towards Photoshop is, from the Photoshop side I see more talk of Lightwave other than Cinema 4D. It doesn’t appear to be as motion centric as Cinema 4D.
Again i’m just trying to get a feal what is the best choice and were the most user group support base is.

I’d agree with your statement that you’ll find more user support for either Lightwave or C4D. I’m not so sure about the statement regarding AE and Photoshop relative to those two packages. I prefer Lightwave, but given what I think you are looking to do, either package would probably work just fine. Lightwave can import AutoCAD data directly, and I’d probably use it for animating your booth models rather than going to After Effects.

Can Cinema 4D import AutoCAD data directly? Or can it at least import DXF files exported from AutoCad?

In other words, which one provides more compatibility with the CAD type programs?

Rokplo seemed to imply that Lightwave can’t export camera data to AE but as of version 8.3 this is not true. (I can’t speak for earlier versions of LW) If you render out an .rpf file from LW8.3 you can import camera data into AE. However, it is more difficult to do the multi-pass stuff from lightwave than from C4D (Or so i hear…. I have never used C4D) Also, if you are interested in Lightwave and AE integration check out AL Street’s Plug in set called the “transmotion utilities pack.”
