I am still trying to find the best workflow for how to render GoPro footage in Vegas 12.
I shot 1080-24p Raw Protone GoPro MP4 footage converted in GoPro Studio and saved as a CineForm AVI file format.
Reading John Rofrano’s Cineform Render Template, it says that Sony stopped shipping the CineForm codec with Vegas 9. I do find the CineForm codec in Vegas 12 when I Render As: Video for Windows -> HD 1080-24p YUV -> custom template -> CineForm codec.
However, when I bring my CineForm AVI footage on the Vegas 12 timeline and try to render this way, I get a red screen with vertical lines, bviously not the correct way to render.
Question: Is there another way to render CineForm Footage in Vegas 12 or do I have to buy the codec?

BTW, just as a comparison, I can render my 1080-24p MP4 footage straight from the GoPro camera into Vegas 12 and Render As: Main Concept AVC/AAC -> bluray 1920×1080-24p and get great footage in DVD Architect as a bluray
Also my 1080-24p CineForm AVI footage works great in DVD Architect but I don’t see any difference compared to the MP4 footage in Architect, so I wonder is it really worth to go with the CineForm workflow ?

    Any comments appreciated!

I have the free GoPro Studio software installed. That does get me decode ability for Cineform.

When I have tried to render to Cineform in Vegas I get an error saying the codec is not installed. I think the free software version only provides decode to third party applications.

I have not bothered with the Cineform workflow. I just put the GoPro MP4 files in Vegas directly. For Protune files, I created my own filter package to handle the adjustments (to my taste). I used color curves (contrast), levels (red tweak), color corrector (saturation) and convolution kernel (for sharpening).

Of course I found a playback performance problem in Vegas 12 with GoPro MP4 files. It would only likely show up with 1080p60 files, unless you have a pretty slow PC. I posted this in the Sony forum and others duplicated my results. I also recently reported this to Sony support.

The CineForm Codec is now called the GoPro-CineForm Codec. Look for it in your list of available codecs in Vegas.

    Jake,

Where is the “GoPro-Cineform codec in Vegas 12 ?

As mentioned earlier, the only “Cineform codec” is listed under :
Videos for Windows(.AVI) -> HD 1080-24p YUV Template.
I don’t find any “GoPro -Cineform codec”.

Oh right…good question. Install the free version of GoPro Studio and that installs the GoPro-CineForm Codec. Its available at gopro.com. Look in the products/software & apps section.
