Is it to early to ask for a comparision of these two codecs?

[Jerry Hatfield] “Is it to early to ask for a comparision of these two codecs?”

Not if somebody has done one…

(I have no Black Magic gear to compare to the CineForm codec unfortunately)

    Tim,
Finally, I did get the demo installed and played with the codec. The viper footage supplied on the disc
is amazing. The codec works fine on P4 3.4 system. It requires some rendering, but hey, it’s not designed to do what I am making it do! The one thing that surprised me about the codec was that it does not support alpha. It is only a 3 channel exporter. I brought in, from AE7, various formats and had to render these files but they did produce alpha. After all of the griping I did about the Canopus codec not having alpha here is another one. By the way, one of the files I brought in was an HQ file that worked, but not in realtime.

One thing I discovered after posting was that when I captured with the Hd link by firewire into the Premiere 2.0 demo, the image was flipped horizontally and vertically. Is there some setting that I missed or is this setup to do this in the demo?

    Hi Jerry,

Check in the HD Link Prefs to make sure the box that says “M2 Lense Adapter mode” isn’t checked. It’s in there to “un-invert” the images created with the Red Rock Micro Prime adapter.

    Tim,
It was the Red Rock check mark that did it. Thanks.
Am I correct with the alpha support, or am I missing something in setup?

I would bet that you are right…CineForm does not carry alpha channels either.

Most of these codecs are designed to create the optimal (whatever that is) combination of visual quality and small payload. Alpha channel adds payload that wouldn’t be used most of the time. I just use uncompressed if I have to export something that way.

Since the arrival of Dynamic Link, I haven’t given it much thought as I do very few actual renders to a clip anymore…

    Tim,
I installed my Video Bundle yesterday, I wasn’t going to until I got the new machine, but, and tried the
dynamic link. I did see it demonstrated at the Video Bundle tour and was glad to see it worked at home.
I was surprised to see the uncompressed title playing in realtime in the Cineform 10bit settings. I still need to learn alot more about the use of this feature. It is hampered by my underpowered machine for doing such project settings.

Having a client in the room and doing some work with Dynamic Link really puts a smile on their face…particularly if they’ve spent the last ten years behind an Avid operator.

    Tim,
Is there any AE7 and PPR02 dynamick link literature available. It would help on
getting up to speed with this.
    Thanks

I think there’s a short tutorial on the Total Training disks included in the box…I’m not sure if Aanarav has done anything on it or not here at the cow…

I’m neck-deep in a book and another article for he Cow as well as the regular ole’ production projects I do for a living…but I’ll see if I have some time next week…

I can’t believe that someone doesn’t have something on the web. I have an intro to the Production Studio DVD available from Class On Demand of course…but I can’t believe you couldn’t find something around the internet that would get you started with Dynamic Link if that’s all you need…
