  • Cineform for AVCHD to AVI conversion?

    Hi everyone,

I finally got my new camera and decided on a Canon Vixia HF S21. It’s great.

It shoots AVCHD video, which I can edit on pretty well with my computer. But if I try to increase the quality in the preview or add effects and transitions, things get choppy.

Should I get Cineform Neoscene to do lossless conversion to AVI to edit footage more smoothly? Does it make a difference? I’ve already used the trial of Neoscene for my old camera to turn 24 fps footage in a 60i wrapper into 24p footage, so I can’t try that again. But if it really does lossless conversion to AVI and my computer can handle the footage better, I’ll do it. So does anyone have experience with this?

Yup. CineForm will play a lot smoother than AVCHD. I use it all the time. If you buy it from videoguys.com it’s only $99 USD and you can get an extra 5% by using the Creative COW coupon. (I think it’s COW5NOW) Videoguys is a great place to buy all of your editing gear.

I’m getting no sound on the Cineform AVI conversions I’ve done. There don’t seem to be any options in the Preferences for the file conversion that affect sound. Any ideas?

Edit: Nevermind, found out what an AC3 filter is. Sometimes I wish video editing was more straight forward.

Ok, so it seems that it does convert the audio, though it has lower volume now. I guess I have to change the AC3 Filter settings.

Yea, the one thing I don’t like about CineForm is that they tell you to download something else to handle AC3 audio (I forget what it is now it was so long ago) but you need to download and install a free tool for AC3 decoding if you don’t already have one on your system. I would contact CineForm to make sure that you have everything correct.
