Cigarette vs. XLR
Posted by Dave M on May 2, 2005 at 7:04 pmHello Everyone,
I’ve decided to buy a new on-camera light, and I was wondering if people prefered the cigarette lighter plug or the XLR plug. Since I don’t have a battery pack yet (I need one of those too), I can still go either way. What do you guys think?

I’m leaning toward the NRG on camera light (the one that’s dimmable).

May 2, 2005 at 7:21 pmHey Dave! Great name! 🙂
Advantages and dis for both, which I won’t get into all of them, but here is the way I would suggest going: XLR (with the additional purchase of an XLR->Cig adapter.)
The XLR will allow you a LOCKING connection to prevent accidental disconnect. Having the light die in mid shot really sucks.
The adapter will allow you to convert to a cig lighter in a pinch if that’s all that’s available.

May 2, 2005 at 8:07 pmI’ve seen the argument go both ways.
The 4 pin XLR is a locking connector, so it won’t accidentally come out in the middle of a shot.
On the other hand, the XLR is a locking connector, so if (for example) your cam is on the tripod and you absentmindedly step away from the rig, you can pull the whole thing down around your ears.
My personal preference is for the XLR.

Now, the headphone cord is another story 😛

In my opinion, I’m leaning torward the XLR solution, as it feels more professional. The only thing that was making me consider the cigarette lighter plugs, was that I’d have the ability to power my camcorders (canons) from them as well. I am (probably too) worried that they’d come unplugged at the most inconvient time, and as I have an abundance of batterys for the cams, it’s not really an issue.
