The church that I attend has had a video ministry for quite some time but they are still in the dark ages (VCR, SD, old equipment). I am the computer guru at the church, but not the video guru. They want to purchase a new video editing system and I have been asked to help. I have some basic experience with AE and Premiere but I don’t know much about the hardware options that available for video production in today’s world and quite honestly, it is a bit overwhelming. All the editors involved in the ministry have basic Premiere skills and that is the program that they would like to stick with.

I would like them to be able to continue with the SD world for the moment but have a system that can easily handle HD. They have plans to purchase some HD cameras in the near future. They are currently using a Matrox card on a 2.4 GHz machine and it is way past time to replace it. I would really appreciate any help that you could give me. I am also interested in some information on storage solutions for video.

Adobe recommends at the minimum, a dual Xeon 2.8GHz machine for HD.. The 2.8Ghz chip is going for about $210 each over at new egg..

You might also consider going with a dual dualcore machine. You can get 2.0GHz dual core opterons for about $280 each (also on new egg).. pair up a couple of those on a mobo, and you’ll be running what is effectively an 8.0GHz Machine (as opposed to the 5.6GHz with two Xeons)

Then pack 4gig of dual channel memory in there, a nice high end video card (I use the GeForce 7800GT), and throw in some massive SATA drives and you should be good to go for many years of editing, standard def or high def.

Do you mean HDV or HD, there is quite a difference in specs for them.

It sounds like you need to create a document listing what the needs are that the church wants to fulfill, such as current and future production and delivery options, a budget and then tell the powers that be what they need to accomplish that goal, rather than just saying “should we get xyz camera etc.”

If they have the money to spend, they should be methodical about how they spend it.
