Allen,
thanks for the info. Do you guys also use the 2700 P2 VariCam? Are you seeing more places get away from 720P, especially now that there are more affordable cameras out there shooting in 1080P?
I’m on the verge of buying a 2700 or 3100.

Phil, we don’t use 720p much at all. We occassionally use it with our HVX, 1080 is our defacto format. We wanted a native 1080 camera, not one that up converts from 720p.

Thanks for the info.. but what is an LUT for the eye piece.. have never come across this term..?

Any other pro,s con,s re the 3100.. except ofcourse the incredible price ?

What are your crews using for downloading in the field? if they ever do that..

About the VF for 3100:

I’ve used both the Color and the BW Viewfinder on the 3700. Since the 3100 became available, I’ve only used the Color Viewfinder. The Color VF is good for focus (compared to other electronic VFs, which all leave a lot to be wanted, imho…). The BW Viewfinder does not allow you to judge focus with a reasonable precision. That also seems to be the opinion of other DPs and operators I’ve talked with who have used both on everything from newsy stuff to episodic TV to feature films. That being said: Some people use the BW VF and are happy with it (or they find workarounds).

About the ‘LUT’ in the 3700/2700:

The ‘LUT’ in the 3700 (and 2700) seems to be a gamma change that emulates a REC709 look in the VF when recording flat FilmRec (could be something more advanced, but I don’t know…). It’s ok to have as it helps me not get too used to the flat image, and important to be aware of, particularly if you use external recorders since it’s also active on the output. Although for 3100 work I haven’t really missed it much since most of my clients who want flat FilmRec/S-log/C-log/log-this-log-that for post color correction pretty much all prefer single chip larger imager these days.

Thanks for your reply.I have a HDX900 and the BW viewfinder was one of the few things I didnt like about the camera,compared to the Sony VF on my digibeta 790.But have got used to it over the years.

I read that a new BW VF had come out with the 3100,although the older model (HDX900) would also work..
great I thought.. a new camera.. AND a better BW VF.. 🙂 just wondered if anyone has used this new model BW finder yet.. Abel cine posted a video a while back saying it really was much better than previous model..

Yes, I was referring to the older B/W viewfinder, probably same thing you have on your HDX900. Good to know there’s a better one out there now. Still sort of puzzles me that in 2011 the VF on my old Arriflex 16SR from the 1970s feels better than the new electronic stuff. Amazing what 35 years of progress can do… 😉

Yes Im pretty sure there was a new one this year.. making the 3100 look even more like what I wanted.
Small-ish ,very good price,64 GB cards that got cheaper.. and added bonus a decent VF..!!

You folks using the 3100, how do you like it, how’s the image and what types of projects are you working on? Why did you choose the 3100 over say a 2700 or 3700, 3000…of course the price is a factor, what else?
