    Hi there …

could someone give me a hint on how to achieve an effect often used in commercials: let´s say there is this sort of a logo where at the end of all these animations there´s allways some kind of reflection moving over the surface. Know what I mean?
I presume not all of those effects are made in 3D. I´d rather guess it´s done by adding the same source material into another layer , then mask out a thin line, animate it over time to get the movement and finally using some apply mode like add or something.

Am I right or completely wrong? Any hints welcome …

Well, true chrome reflections are a bit more complicated, but what you seem to be referring to is often called a ‘glint’ effect.

It can be achieved in many different ways, for instance by animating a white feathered solid over the logo, using an add or screen transfer mode with reduced transparancy.

But you could indeed also duplicate the source (logo), and apply an animated feathered mask to the top layer, and set it’s transfer mode to add or screen. Maybe also blur the top layer a little, and play with the brightness levels of the top layer.

To cheese it up a little, you could even add a really subtle lensflare onto the glimmer effect. But make it really subtle so nobody actually sees the flare.

There are also some plugins that do it for you.

    Hey,

If you mean that because it’s chrome it reflects the enviroment around it. Best thing is to use the logo (text or what ever) as a travelling matte for the relfection map / background (choose a nice sky background or something for that) and then use displacement map (using the logo again) over the actuall background. Place this above the logo, and use ADD/SCREEN Multiply or OVERLAY and adjust the opacity down. You’ll get a nice reflective chrome look. You might want to blur the background layer to it’ll soften it out a bit. Then overlay this GLINT look the others are talking about.

damn, hope that makes sense ..

    Good luck.
