Chroma or Luma? Trying to knock out white background
Any help much appreciated:
I’m doing a corporate cut and I’m still fairly new to avid. I’m using Avid Media Composer with Sapphire plugins and also have a spectral matte installed. PC, Pal system, footage shot on DV Cam.
I have a shot from a conference MCU of the main speaker, unfortunately the speaker moved off the lectern and stood in front of the projector screen.
The screen is totally white so I’m thinking there might be a way to improve the shot (ie polish a turd) by knocking out the white background and replacing it with a blurry blue corporate one.
Of course, since it’s white – it’s not the best key. I’ve got as far as losing most of the white but the speaker still has a halo – does anyone have any ideas on how i can do this?

If you only have an avid at your disposal, you could try inverting the footage. Then use the color correction to crank up the midtones to 235+ white and crush the blacks. Do a video mixdown, then use that layer as a matte.

I’ve got AE too – might give that a go if I can’t get your method to work.

I was going to mention AE, but you posted here – basically the same procedure in AE, you probably have more tools available to do it there though.
