Chroma key problem. Added some pics for explanation.
I was at an anniversary the other dayand brought a camera, but sadly, not a plan (or a greenscreen). As the evening progressed, I conceived the idea of making a documentary with people in front of the camera, telling funny stories. Later, I would edit them in a funny way, sorted by subject.
This is (what’s supposed to be) the setting:
I use Sony Vegas 9 for editing. What I want to do is show pictures about the subject at hand in the right window. Like you see with newsreaders:
Chroma keying doesn’t work obviously: filtering the grey color range of the window removes 90% of the rest as well.
I tried making a mask, to cut out the window and show the picture underneath, but people tend to wave their arms while talking, and their hands are behind the mask, and disappear.I’m sure there is some other way I haven’t thought of.
Help would be greatly appreciated!

Reshoot the video using green paper to cover the window. Your problem is that the window is gray and the person is wearing gray. There is no way for a key to work because the image has too much gray.
Your only other option is to draw a mask around the window and any arms that overlay it and painstakingly keyframe the movement of the mask to follow the arm movement. This could be a lot of work which is why I said to just reshoot it.
A little pre-production planning can make life a lot easier in post. Consider it a valuable lesson learned. 😉

If the camera doesn’t move, you can use PIP and have the pics cover the window, and her hand would still be behind the pics. Besides the chromakey filter in Vegas doesn’t work well with DV footage due to the 4.1.1. color space. Putting a Chromablur filter set to medium before the chromakey helps alot. If you do re-shoot with green paper, make sure it is flat as in not shiny and is wrinkle free.
