  • Chroma Key (Green Screen) in Boris or FCP5

Posted by Michael Allen on March 17, 2006 at 2:28 pm

Could someone with experience in green screen suggest which application to use. Should I go with Boris or FCP5. I am using a DSR 40O. I know DVCam is not the best format for this but it is my best camera. I could do testing, however if someone has already tried both apps. then it will save me time. I am guessing that Boris will be suggested but I have been wrong before. Thanks for all your help!

I can’t speak for FCP, but Boris has very food keyers….If you don’t get a good key, there are a few things you can try.

This is an after effects trick, but it works in Red….Duplicate your footage layer. Apply gaussian blur to top layer…around 10-15 pixels. Now set the compositing mode on this layer to either soft light or overlay (depends on footage, overlay may make it too dark).
Precompose these two layers. Apply the chroma key to the precomp and key. Apply levels and clean up levels.

Why do this you may ask ??? Well, this principal softens the video a little, makes it loook better in most cases, helps the lighting of the green screen appear more constant, and helps reduce DV artifacting.

    Hope this helps

I agree with Mark that RED has good keyers but I can’t wait to try this trick!
