    Okay Guys,

It’s almost Christmas time (and Chanukah and Kwanzaa for that matter) so I thought it would be appropriate to ask what are the latest and greatest toys out there for our favorite edit system. I’m really curious as to what filters and effects you guys are using. I’m looking at the Sapphire plug-ins but they seem ridiculously expensive. I’m also looking for a good “film-look” solution – is “Color” enough? or should I be looking at magic bullet or Nattress Film Effects? Here’s my contribution to the Christmas list:

24″ TVLogic HD Monitor – It’s stunning for HD work, color is incredibly close to my Sony 20″ CRT. It falls short for SD footage however. The “1:1″ scan rate makes the image about 10″ big on the diagonal and that’s what you need to keep it in for decent resolution on SD footage. Still it looks great at that size. It’s just tiny. Increasing the image size to the 24” capacity on SD footage works off some kind of line doubling algorithm which makes for a pretty poor picture. I still use my Sony CRT for SD work. With that said, the images from an HD input are incredible and every bit as good as the HD CRTs I’ve seen.

    Blackmagic Decklnk HD Extreme
    – Used to own a Decklink SP. Love this company and their cards. Ingesting HD or SD is a breeze with there hardware. Their tech support has always been helpful too.

    Adobe Photoshop CS3
    – Work with it all the time. Industry standard not much more to say than that.

Not much of a list I know but I’m a cameraman more than an editor. I’m very interested to hear what you all will contribute. I need to spend some money before the new year . . . . so the government doesn’t use it to bail out Wall Street. 😉

In our tests we ran it at 2:1 and it was great for color grading in that mode. I only switched to 1:1 to ensure proper interlace patterns.

    Hey Walter,

I just bought your Color tutorial! I’m sure 2:1 is just fine for grading SD footage but the resolution isn’t up to snuff compared to a CRT. I have to admit that after slapping down a sizable chunk of change to buy the thing I was a bit dismayed by it’s “resolution” performance with SD. Still, from what I can tell all LCD HD Monitors have this issue because they’re designed for 1920×1080 HD work and so 720×486 pixels is just inherently small. . . . Come to think of it though my 32″ Samsung HDTV does a great job with DVDs . . . Hmmm . .

Any choice toys out there Walter or are you keeping them for one of your articles?

the TV Logic 24″ has the best SD resolution of any HD LCD display I’ve seen out there. The 1:1 is a perfect pixel by pixel image and of course it is small when you put that 720×486 image up on a 1920×1080 display. 2:1 was perfectly fine for editing, grading and such for us. We ran the unit for two weeks in our testing and unless something better comes along in the next few months, that’s the unit we’ll be installing in all three of our suites. Just waiting on the cash to purchase all three at once.

I’m glad to hear you’re looking to purchase them. It was your recommendation that led me to the purchase in the first place. It’s interesting that the 2:1 resolution doesn’t bother you as much as it bothers me. When I received the TVLogic, I was so disappointed with the resolution of SD material I bought a used Sony PVM-20M4U 20″ CRT. Now I use both . . . . and as you mentioned, the color rendition of the TVLogic is every bit as good as the Sony CRT.
