Choppy video in Timeline

Let me preface all of this by saying I’m an absolute Premiere Pro virgin and I’m taking a “learn by doing” approach to this…..so bear with me and speak slowly!! I’ve figured out the basic basics. I have a background audio track that I’m trying to coordinate transitions to. I’ve managed to set up titles and still pictures, but when I try to add video clips, it all goes to HE** in a handbasket. The specs that I can find: I have the project set up in NTSC Widescreen format at 29.97 frames/sec. The video was shot on a digital camcorder in mpeg format and has imported into APP at 29.97 frames/sec. I can import the video without problem. Had to play with the compression ratio a bit, but that seems ok. When I play the video in the monitor, everything looks ok. I want to seperate the video from the audio and only overlay the video portion. I can get my clipped video into the Timeline without too much difficulty, but when I go to play it back from the Timeline, the video is very choppy and seems to “skip”.I’m sure there’s an easy explanation for this and probably has to do with frame rate somewhere, but for the life of me, I can’t get this fixed. I’ve tried playing in Test projects where both the audio and video components are placed in the Timeline, and I get the same results. I’m going strictly on a couple of books I have here and fully realize that Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Have you rendered the file before trying to play it back?
You’re saying that your video is mpg. Premiere doesn’t work the best with mpg, so sometimes it won’t play back properly until it is rendered.You’re saying you’re really new, so maybe you don’t know this – To render just (with your timeline window active) press enter and it should render for you.

Ugh….No go. Tried the rendering, got that done without problem, but still no difference in the video and how choppy it is. In the monitor section, the clip is about 18 seconds long. In the timeline, it plays in about 5 seconds.
I’m at a loss here….Anyone have any other ideas??

Well now isn’t that interesting…..just tried importing a .wmv format video and that worked without a hitch. Smooth transition, no problem there. So I guess you were right when you said that APP doesn’t like .mpg very much…..will see what I can do from here.

Just to let you know, I’m pretty inexperienced with Premiere myself, but another thing you could try to see if it’s a problem with the file/project or just playback.
Try exporting an avi file of the project and see if that plays properly.To do this go file – export – movie.
If I remember correctly, I’ve done the same sort of thing with a mpg file and premiere just would play it, but it worked fine once exported.
