    Hi all,
I’m working on a project where I have text over my footage and slugs being used as crops. All sources play back fine in the timeline (when rendered), and they play back fine when I export.

I have two clips that are causing me grief. I’m playing these clip in the timeline (animation compression 720×486 at 23.98 fps) with no other layers active, and it plays back fine. I can export the clip with quicktime conversion and it plays back just fine in quicktime as well.

When I add text to a layer above the clip, or even just crop the clip with no other layers on, that clip’s playback is choppy after rendering as well as after exporting with quicktime conversion. It’s as if it’s adding pulldown (repeating frames) or some such. All else is the same (format, fps, etc).

    Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.
    I’m sure there’s something simple I”m missing.

    Thanks!
    Jesse

“the timeline (animation compression 720×486 at 23.98 fps)”
You mean your timeline is set at Animation?
    I thought that was a no-no…

    Please confirm.

    Thanks Neil for your reply!

    Yes, my timeline is animation.

My source files are animation compression. They all play back fine in the timeline. They also play fine (when rendered) with cropped slugs as letterboxes and text over the letterbox. They also play fine in quicktime when exported with quicktime conversion (also animation). I have two files in particular that don’t. As far as I know, those two files are identical compression, fps, and size (720×486). At least when imported into fcp they indicate identical format.

just to note, all the source files play fine in quicktime.

I’m under the impression that if you want smooth playback and you want to minimize degradation, you are to have your timeline be identical to what your source files are. Am I doing going about this all wrong?

    Thanks again!

Thanks anyone who read this and gave it some thought. I don’t know exactly what the problem was, but I found a hack to make it work. I imported into AE to see if I could get it to playback smoothly, changing frame rates and all that. No luck. I ended up rendering it out of Nuke as a quicktime movie with Animation compression at 24fps. Now it works just like all the rest of my source files. Beats me.
    Thanks!

ah! good info! thanks! I’m updating my demo reel, and the source files in question are indeed a few years old. There’s a lot to know about formats and codecs, and if you don’t work with a variety of formats on a regular basis, it’s easy to get lost. Thanks for sharing!
