Hello, been trying to find an answer to this for some time now so thought I’d try here:

I shoot with a Canon XH A1S. When I edit 24F or 30F footage in Final Cut, after about 5-10 minutes (sometimes shorter, sometimes longer) the playback becomes choppy. Simply closing and re-opening the project in FCP solves this, but it’s really become quite a hassle. This does not happen with 60i footage. I am capturing as HDV, and editing in a 23.98 timebase.

I can’t imagine that anything is wrong with my system, since playback is fine initially, and is fine again when I re-open the project. However, here’s what I’m using.

    I-Mac 2.4Ghz
    4GB RAM
    1TB G-Drive (scratch disk)
    1TB LaCie BigDisk (scratch disk)

I save waveform cache, thumbnail cache and autosaves to my internal HD, which has plenty of free space.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you trashed prefs and repaired permissions? If not, do that first and see if it helps. Also run Disk Warrior. If you don’t have it, you should get it. It keeps your system disk healthy.

How do I get rid of preferences and permissions? You mean my Final Cut preferences?

Yes, FCP prefs. Here’s a Cow tutorial on the subject.
