choppy play back on dvd
I edited a video in FCP that was 1 hour long and was shoot in standard DV. When I exported it, I used Export> Quicktime Movie. Then I burned a dvd of it in DVD SP on a 4.7GB dvd. Is there a reason why the video looks choppy when I play it back? In the canvas, it looks really good. But on dvd, it looks very pixelated. Does Compressor have anything to do with making it look better? Do I even need to use Compressor? Thank you very much in advance.

There are hundreds of threads on this topic and often the present conflicting advice. “Choppy” must be clarified, though. Are you sure it’s the MPEG2 video file on the DVD that is at fault or is it your playback system? If the choppiness is variable, it’s your playback system. If it’s absolutely consistent, it might be your MPEG2 endcoding procedures. There are too many things that can cause frames to repeat or drop. No way to even speculate form where I’m sitting.
Jut my opinion: Conventional DV does not benefit from intense customization of the transcoding until you know what you’re doing and know how to control Compressor. I export a self contained movie as DV from FCP and drop that into DVDSP as an asset. From there, you can select to modify the transcoding settings, it’s all in the manual. One of the major things you can do easily is to use AC3 audio encoding in a side step using Compressor. This lowers total bitrate without compromising audio quality and allows you some headroom for video bitrate. See the manual, it’s not complicated but it’s weird.
