I’m working on a documentary consisting of many different kinds of footage, as most documentaries are. Right now things are pretty simple. I have some DV PAL and DigiBeta. I wanted to get your opinion as to the best codec to use for my FCP timeline. I’m leaning toward DVCPRO50.

If I use DVCPRO50, do you have any transcoding suggestions as to how I can get the best quality out of the PAL? I’m obviously not going to get the same sharpness in the transcoded file’s image as I am with the original, but it would be nice to make it as close as possible.

Let me know what you think.

I really like the versatility and performance ofthe DVCPRO50 codec. It is also very space efficient. I use it in NTSC all the time and when I am mixing Betacam SP and DV footage.

Any suggestions for DV PAL to NTSC conversion? Apple’s Compressor 2 is very good. I’ve tried DV Film Atlantis and gotten pretty good results, but the interlacing is kind of a problem.

The software based one that I love is Natress Stanards conversion.

Used these very recently on NTSC to PAL DVD’s with very excellent results.

Natress Stanards conversion is AMAZING for NTSC -> PAL conversion. Slow and a bit quirckey at times, but very good quality output.
