So, I’ve worked off of my Powerbook 17″ G4 for the past 4 years, it was a beast back in the day, but now it’s beginning to slow down with everything else changing. Never had a single problem on it though!(knock on wood…or aluminum…)

I’m running Final Cut Studio 1 on it, and I’ve found it’s near impossible to run a plausible HD setup on it. So as I’m searching for a new set up, would it be smarter for me to purchase a G5 tower and a slower laptop for other use? Or is it plausible to purchase the beefiest macbook pro that money can afford and edit off of that? My workload is about half and half HD/non-HD, but I assume that it will move into more HD as the years go on.

And I’m also looking for logical, practical purchases, I can’t go much over the 4000 range…..

Put all of your money into a new Mac Pro and keep your PowerBook if you absolutely have to have a laptop. An 8-core Mac Pro will give you much more bang for the buck than a Macbook Pro. You can use the Powerbook for offline or proxy editing.

What type of HD are you working with? HDV? DVCPRO HD? XDCAM EX? Uncompressed HD? Some specifics about your workflow would be useful in helping forum users to make relevant suggestions for an optimum system configuration.
