    Hey All,

Attached is a picture I’m trying to convert to 3d for an upcoming event. Anyone have any hints/tips on creating the chiseled text look?? It’s a piece of cake on the straight edged letters, but I can’t figure out how to create the cuts I need on the curved portions of the text. Do I just need to model everything with polygons and hypernurb it? I’m not expecting an easy answer…if there is one great…i’m willing to put in the work to get the look, just kinda stumped on where to go next!

    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately you will have to model it with polygons. I would create an empty polygon object and then use the create polygon tool in quad strip mode to model the letters. You’ll probably have to use some other modeling tools too. Use the spline letter shapes as a guide with spline snapping turned on. Create the necessary geometry flat, then select the edges in the center and move them up to create the chissel effect.

Here’s a video tutorial demonstrating one letter. I don’t think I got the bevel 100% right but you’ll get the idea. https://www.3danvil.com/tutorials/chisel/chisel.html

Forgot to add a phong tag to the polygon object in the tutorial, which will make it look better.

Many thanks kind sir! HUGE Help! It was creating those curved cuts that was killing me. didn’t realize edge cut would do the trick!

Any suggestions on modeling a football helmet by chance?

(other than just buying the model of course:) )

    Thanks again!

    Glad I could help. 🙂

Football helmet … hmmm. That’s really an exercise in box modeling and not an especially easy one. As you’re probably on a deadline I’d recommend buying one and maybe do one of your own in your spare time as a learning exercise.

Well, I’m not on a deadline for a football helmet, that is something i’m trying to get under my belt in my “free” time just to have in the can, as well as gain the modeling experience. Any good box modeling tuts/resources you can think of??
