    I’m trying to make a chess knight.

    I already made the stand using a lathe nurbs, no problem. The head is what i cant understand how he did it. I downloaded a project and i saw he made one half of the head then used a symmetry object to complete the other half. I also saw he used a plane for the one half, but how did he make it into that horse head shape is beyond me…Did he just keep adjusting points,edges,polygons into the desired shape? Is that how it was done?

    Here is a picture of the project i had

    Hard to say from the screen grab, but there organic forms are generally done one of two ways, or a combination of both:

    1. Box modeling: starting with a cube or other low-poly primitive, move points to approximate shape and use knife tool, bevel, and extrude to add additional detail. Google “edge loops” or box modeling for more info.;

    2. Point-by-point modeling: start with an empty polygon object and add geometry with the point>add tool, bridge tool, and/or create polygon tool. Then add detail with knife/bevel/extrude.

    I am trying to move, scale, add points to obtain the shape, but i think it may be out of my league. I’ll keep trying and atleast work out a similar shape. I guess this really is somewhat of an art, actually drawing the shape, in a way :p

    It’s certainly something of an art, in much the same way that sculpture is something of an art.

    I tried initially to do it in a different way, but i wasn’t able to, then i saw a tutorial on how to do it using Maya. The person there used a cylinder as a base for the shape, so i decided to give it a shot and atleast i managed to turn it in close to the desired shape. It has alot of rough edges but i think it will do at my level.
