I hear you on that. I actually was using “Ultra Key” when I first started and was happy with the results., but after I saw Keith’s article, I tried Vegas. I mostly work in a very controlled lighting environment, so I normally can get a very good key and I’ve gotten so comfortable with Vegas that it’s my “Default” keyer under those conditions.

(John) That was before Vegas Pro 10 added support for GPU rendering. I would now recommend that you buy the most powerful CUDA card you can afford for Vegas pro 10 and beyond.

So, you think the GTX470 is good for Vegas requirements or would you recommend the Quadro 2000 (or others) if your budget permitted. Like you said in your post, you doubt that doubling the price for the system mainly on the cost up the video card is going to double your performance, but what is optimal trade off for performance/cost for Vegas. (I know it’s somewhat a subjective question, but I do value the thoughts of people like yourself in this forum)

I’m not qualified to recommend GeForce vs Quadro because I’ve never owned a Quadro card nor have I convinced myself to buy one yet. 😉 I would love to see some benchmarks between the two but they don’t exist. Vidoguys said that the GTX470 performs as well as the Quadro 4000 with Adobe’s Mercury playback engine. That’s good enough for me. I trust those guys. Why would you pay 3x the price for the Quadro? I can’t answer that which is why I haven’t bought one yet.

No one knows where Vegas will go with more GPU acceleration or whether choosing a Quadro card over a GeForce card makes any difference. In the absence of any compelling evidence, I would personally choose the cheaper option.

OK, I found this benchmark which shows the GTX470 right under the Quadro 6000 and the Quadro 4000 is way below it. Not sure how it relates to Vegas or if it’s a fair benchmark for Workstation cards like the Quadro:

Thanks for info Gary. And the chart was a bit eye opening John. Very helpful in making a decision…time to go shopping!

But first one last question (and I hope it’s not a loaded one). I recently got an email from Creative Cow for the Matrox Compressed HD video card to ride along side your main card. I couldn’t find out too much info on it as it relates to how it could impact the system I’m building, but I am do HD for web and smartphone. Mainly short 3-5 minutes of video and 3-5 short films (20mins) shot on my Sony HDR-SR12. Is this something I should consider or are am I good to go with the GTX470?

Just to be fair, I don’t know if that benchmark really takes into account the special features of the Quadro cards but then again, I don’t think Vegas does either. Sony specifies any CUDA enabled card will do so the more CUDA cores the better.

If I’m not mistaken, that card only works with Apple Compressor and Adobe Media Encoder, so it won’t help a Vegas editor at all. 🙁

Hey Gary, I hate to change the subject but while you’re here… What about Adobe After Effects CS5? I do a fair amount of work in After Effects and I’m wondering if it takes advantage of something special about the Quadro 4000 or if the GTX470 is just as good. Since Adobe does list non-Quadro cards as being compatible, I’m guessing that they don’t use anything special on the Quadro cards and that the GTX470 should be similar to a Quadro 6000 as far as After Effects is concerned (i.e., both have 448 CUDA cores). Have you videoguys done any testing in this regard and if so, what have you found?

The GTX470 is a killer card with CS5! It’s our top value recommendation.

Quadro cards are great, but expensive. For animation work and really heavy AE, you will find it worth the extra bucks.

With Vegas, QAuadro gives you no benefit.

Wow! You have Ultra Key and prefer the keyer in Vegas?? I’ve used Ultra for years as it’s one of the best keyers around, right up there with Keylight. Can you post a link to Keiths artical?
I won a national green screen contest a few years ago from CMT, Country Music Television, and I used Ultra and Vegas to do it. Here’s some links for it.
